Gender Mobile Initiative recently launched the second cohort of its
Amplifying Female Students' Voices Project at the University of Abuja,
generously funded by @voice.global. This initiative aims to empower female
student leaders to combat and address sexual harassment on campus effectively.
The initiative
kicked off with a comprehensive training session tailored for selected campus
ambassadors at the University of Abuja. These ambassadors were equipped with
crucial skills and knowledge to amplify the voices of female student leaders
and to actively prevent and respond to incidents of sexual harassment within
the university community.
The training
sessions were designed to empower female student leaders to become proactive
bystanders, providing them with the tools needed to recognize and intervene in
instances of sexual harassment. Moreover, participants were trained to offer
psychosocial support to victims, fostering a culture of empathy and solidarity
within the student body.
One of the most
impactful aspects of the training was the opportunity for participants to share
their own experiences of assisting survivors of sexual assault. This not only
provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by victims but also
highlighted the importance of offering support and solidarity within the campus
community.
In addition to the training sessions, the Gender Mobile Initiative
introduced the CampusPal app as a tool to further mitigate gender-based
violence (GBV) in educational institutions. This app provides a platform for
students to report incidents of sexual harassment anonymously, ensuring that
survivors have access to the support and resources they need.
By empowering female student leaders and fostering collective action among students, the Gender Mobile Initiative is playing a crucial role in creating safer and more inclusive campus environments. Through initiatives like the Amplifying Female Students' Voices Project, they are working towards a future where all students can pursue their education free from the threat of sexual harassment.
