Introduction:

The 5th Voice Linking and Learning event in Nigeria was held from June 5th to 7th at the Green Legacy Hotel in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. It brought together various grantee partners and stakeholders committed to promoting inclusion, participation, and equity for marginalized communities in Nigeria. This was done under the auspices of the linking and learning component of the Voice project in Nigeria implemented by Oxfam and currently facilitated by Cognito and NINE. This article aims to highlight the key takeaways and lessons learned from the event, emphasizing the importance of collaborative learning, empowerment, and innovation in driving positive social change.

Creating a Space for Reflection, Exploration, and Testing:

The bedrock of the linking and learning event hinged on the Voice theory of change which aims to empower, amplify, and influence. The grantee partners were encouraged to reflect on their work, document lessons learned, and share their stories. This introspection allows them to identify areas for growth and improvement, while also celebrating their successes and milestones. By creating a safe space for open dialogue, participants are able to engage in fruitful discussions, exchange ideas, and explore new possibilities.

Collaborative Group Sessions:

The event fostered collaboration and networking through a series of interactive activities and group sessions. Participants were grouped based on their areas of interest and experiences. These collaborations provided a platform for individuals to share their proud moments, challenges faced, and lessons learned along their advocacy journeys while also co-creating and charting ways forward. The open and supportive environment encouraged participants to be vulnerable and empowered them to inspire and learn from one another.

Linking and Learning Approaches:

Various approaches were employed to maximize the potential for reflection, exploration, and testing. Grantee partners hosted open space sessions and mini-learning hubs for peer learning and feedback. Amplification approaches were a key focus as this ensures that the voices of rightsholders are heard and their stories shared. Leveraging the Voice Naija digital platform is also critical as a valuable tool for amplifying the impactful work of grantee partners and raising awareness via traditional and social media platforms. Grantees were urged to continually share their work on the platform.

Coaching and peer-to-peer learning were also emphasized during the event. Participants identified coaching needs, both at the individual and organizational levels, and proposed coaching timelines to support their growth. This approach facilitates knowledge sharing, mentorship, and capacity strengthening within the grantee community.

The existing communities of practice collaborated in a “village meeting’ where they reviewed and further enhanced their learning agenda. By joining specific communities based on shared interests, participants were able to collaborate, exchange insights, and collectively innovate. The review of CoP achievements showcased the power of collaboration and the strength that comes from working together towards a common goal.

Innovation and Positive Impact:

The LLE highlighted the importance of innovation in driving positive change. Participants were encouraged to test new ideas, take risks, and learn from their mistakes. The focus was on finding innovative solutions to address the challenges faced by marginalized communities. By sharing their trials, triumphs, and lessons learned, participants inspired one another and contributed to a culture of continuous improvement.

The Voice Linking and Learning event continues to serve as a catalyst for collaborative learning, empowerment, and innovation. Through reflection, exploration, and testing, participants gain valuable insights, establishing connections, and developing roadmaps for their future work. The event showcased the power of collective action and the transformative potential of collaborative learning and knowledge sharing. As grantee partners continue to work towards inclusion, participation, and equity, the lessons learned and experiences shared during this event will undoubtedly contribute to their ongoing efforts to create a more just and inclusive society.
