Amplifying your stories with Social Media

In the bid to get the stories of rightsholders across to those who can influence positive change, it should be known that social media provides an unparalleled opportunity to accomplish this. Social media enhances visibility, allows for direct interaction with target audiences, helps to foster relationships with partners while reducing advertising costs and increasing search engine rankings. In sharing the above perspectives, Malti Danjuma of Youth Hub Africa, emphatically told the second Linking and Learning Event participants that “in a nutshell, social media matters”. Even though this sounded like the charge for initiating a street protest action, it is true. With a vast variety of platforms, applications and add-ons, social media is seen as a pervasive tool that has to be integrated into the marketing communications plan of any organization most especially learning organizations committed to positive change. Getting social media right involves a couple of tips which include the following: - **Update your social media profile regularly**. Key questions to ask are - Can my target audience relate to my social media profile? Will they find what they are looking for once they arrive? Will they know what I am about from a glance? - **Create compelling content**. Your content should get your audience hooked and get them to take required action tied to your goals. - **Be consistent in putting out content**. Content consistency encourages credibility, builds trust and strengthens the reputation of your brand and online presence - **Engage with your online community**. Engagement involves building an online community. This doesn’t stop at creating compelling content but also encouraging your audience reactions. - **Leverage new features**. Here’s the interesting thing! Social media platform compensate users with a wider reach once they make use of their new features so use them. - **Redirect audience to your personal landing pages**. Landing pages are an excellent place for those engaging with your post to learn more about your organization or brand. - **Use free tools to make better and more engaging content**. A great social media content is eye-catching, relevant and visually appealing. For instance, Canva, remove.bg, freepik.com, Photopea etc. are free third-party design apps that can be used for easy and professional designs. Amplifying your stories through the avenues provided by social media is akin to sprinkling pixie dust on your post because social media has the capacity to give your stories ‘wings to fly’. It also impacts not just a local but global audience. Therefore, it is pertinent to take advantage of the opportunities it provides while also taking steps to address its limitations. Keep sharing the great work you do via social media because as Charles Leadbeater has said, “You are what you share” More resources: [SM Resource Sites](https://www.voicenaija.org/Newsroom/Blog?blogId=75)
